That's a borderline maybe. If the player has only one disk drive, and the power supply really can handle 1500ma with regularity, and every bit of componentry in the player and the adapter are all within spec, then theoretically it would work. If it were me, I'd be looking for something beefier if I wanted it to be reliable. I take it you read the spec and you see that the power supply you linked does in fact meet the spec, but that it's borderline? Anyway, if I were in the market for a power supply, I'd order one of the units linked there and skip that particular ratshack unit.

The plug you quoted appears to be the right one, however.

Damn, I see that All Electronics is sold out of the recommended ones again. Hence your question.

Argh, this happens every time.

Anyone got U.S., available, in-stock part numbers for proper power supplies?

These guys have a number of products that will do the job:

http://www.powersolutions.com/pdfcat/desk/desk.html

I haven't investigated whether or not they will sell in low qty (like singles) and if not, where to get them "retail"

And these guys have more:

http://www.cui.com/srchresults.asp?catky=764537&subcatky=356029

And another: http://www.peaktopeakpower.com/catalogs/meanwell/kwm020b.html (They have more than are shown on that page - ie. with higher current capacity still)

And these guys have some stuff too: http://www.triadmagnetics.com/Catalog/subcategory/plugins.html

From just a few seconds of browsing each one, the secnd link, CUI seem to have the widest assortment of packages. Let me know what more digging through these links finds. My second adapter is at a friend's house and I'm not sure when I'll get it back.

FWIW I'm using a power supply rated at 1A on my 50Gb (10+40) MkIIa and I've had no problems at all. Maybe the UK has a different type of Ampere... :-)

I have that exact Radio Shack adapter here, powering one of my Netwinders -- which draw a LOT more power than my Empegs. Much, much more than beefy enough for the application.

Heck.. the stock mini adapters that were originally supplied are only 1A rated, so your 1.5A power supply is definitely overkill (just fine, use it!).

EDIT: The plug you linked to is the exact correct one as well.

Cheers

Where do you get "borderline" from those specs, Tony? That's a nice beefy supply in the links (or did the links change after posting?). 1500mA is *plenty* of juice for this application.

Cheers

At what voltage? 1 amp at 13 volts is more power than 1 amp at 12 volts. And Mark, the factory power supplies were, if I recall correctly, 1 amp at 15 volts. Weren't they?

With that reasoning, 1A @15V is 15VA (voltamperes, a rating that's often used with transformers, not quite the same as watt) while 1.5A @12V is 18VA...

No, the Mk2A "mini" style AC adapters are 12VDC@1A -- I have a handful of them here in front of me as I type.

The Mk2 adapter was different, but I cannot check mine as it is buried inside my docking station.

I'm guessing the mini adapters for the Mk2a were simply well made and lived up to the specs, then. Others who've bought power supplies with 1a @ 12v ratings from Radio Shack have reported that they occasionally cut out.

Basically, my reluctance to recommend the power supply from the top of this thread is based on the fact that it's got a Radio Shack logo on it. That practically guarantees questionable quality...

Well, like I said -- it's got 60% overcapacity for the job, more than enough margin here. And I really do have one of those exact supplies here, running 24/7 keeping my webserver alive for the past four years.

Cheers
