Wanting to test the sound quality of WAV files against mp3 files, I decided to upload some wav files to the Empeg. After doing a drag and drop in emplode, I learned that it ignores all wav files. Does anybody know how I am supposed to get these wav files onto the Empeg? The specs specifically say that this thing supports wav files. Thanks, Aaron Newsome.

I don't know where you read in the specs that it supports wav files, because at this time, it doesn't. the current decoder only knows how to handle mp3 formats. The 1.1 release is set to support wav and MS media format. no estimate on time to release yet.. people are expecting it to happen this fall.

Well I got your post about 15 minutes too late. I used emptool to upload the wav files and now my player is completley locked up and I can't figure out how to make it work again. Sigh.

The problem is that it doesn't know how to handle the wav file and hangs while trying to play it.

Try re-installing the kernel and it should sit in a blank playlist. You can then run emplode and delete the files.
If that doesn't work, put the player to sleep as soon as it boots and then sync to it.

Good luck.

Well I just installed a new developer image and I thought it would set it back to a blank playlist too but it didn't. After the upgrade it continues to try to play the wav file and it completely locks up the player. None of the buttons or the remote work whatsoever. I can't even power the damn thing down. Emplode wont connect either. I can however get a prompt over the serial port but I have no idea how to make anythingin empeg work from the command prompt. I tried looking at tthe files sizes and dates on the fids maybe to try and find the wave files and delete them, but the number of utilities in /bin are very limeted. There is no file command, no way to mount a remote filesystem or any way to edit a file as far as I can see. Right now I have a dead player and cannot seem to get it out of this lockup.

When in bash prompt:

# Mount things R/W
rw; rwm
# Go to dir with tunes
cd /drive0/fids
# List all the files, newest at the bottom
ls -aort
# Remove both offending tunes and their tag files (tunes end in 0, tags in 1)
rm xyz*
# Remount R/O
ro; rom
# Restart the player
exit

You will still have to resync in order to repair the playlist with missing tunes.

...continues to try to play the wav file and it completely locks up the player...

I think there is something more going on here.

I have .wav files on my empeg (1.1 alpha tester) and a while back I "downgraded" from 1.1 to test the new 1.03 software with tuner support. (I've since reinsalled 1.1) When I had 1.03 installed, if I attempted to play a .wav file I just got a warning message on the display, something about "...unsupported file type" and was able to skip to the next song in the playlist without difficulty.

Perhaps it is something to do with my .wav files having been installed by 1.1 emplode, rather than emptool as in your case?

If you can get the prompt, type this at the prompt (carefully!)

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda3 bs=512 count=16

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/empeg_state bs=128 count=1

...then ctrl-D and the player should start. Remove the wav files & all should be fine again.

I know this is going to be redundant with the immanent release of 1.1(!), but could we have a quick FAQ on this or have we all learnt our lesson?

You have to know the secret handshake, and you'd have to be very determined to get through that initiation ritual. Tony still has the scars.

Yeah, but that's not the worst part. The worst part is that the alpha testers all have to be strapped down and listen to one of Rob's poems.

Yep. v1.1 emplode fills in the "codec" tag, which tells it to use the wav codec. v1.0 emplode doesn't, so it attempts to use the MP3 codec by default.

...one of Rob's poems.

Does he persist in that vogonistic style?
