Does anyone know if the Microsoft Ultimate TV boxes made for DirecTV don't require and extra PVR service fee (like tivo) since the service is long-dead? I thought I heard you got the PVR functions for free now, but I'm not certain of that.

Like the DirecTiVo, the only thing the "service" is is the absence of a command to tell your box to stop recording. That "service" is definitely not dead, and DirecTV is more than happy to charge you for it.

That said, I'm not 100% positive there's still a fee, but I can't imagine why there wouldn't be.

I always heard rumors that if Tivo closed-up shop, the boxes would all be granted lifetime subscription status and continue working without phoning home. Since DirecTV is the payee, I guess there is no reason for them to stop charging for DirecTivo or UltimateTV service. I thought I heard UltimateTV was free since its death in 2003. I guess I was wrong.
