Another question out of left field for the empegbbs answer machine! I bought a ultrasonic pest control (my wife saw a rat in the garage, once it hasn't returned) device that plugs into the wall. The instructions say not to use it in an area where there are flammable gases. Now is the garage a safe place to us this device? Can the ultrasonic waves really ignite a fire? I'll call the company tomorrow, but was wondering of anyone here knew anything about this sort of thing. Besides the two cars that are kept in the garage there are also a couple of empty liquid chlorine containers for the pool.

EDIT: link to device: http://www.viatekproducts.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=8F0000-1097842231

It's not likely that the ultrasonics waves themselves will ignite anything, but the device is electrical and may not be UL rated for environments containing flammable substances.

I'd suggest that the appearance of the device and disappearance of the rat are coincidental, I've tried them against foxes, mice and rats with very little effect.

I haven't yet plugged in the thing. I'm fearful of an exploding garage. The rat appeared shortly after the house next door was tented for termites.

I used one for insects -- cockroaches, in particular -- when I was in Los Angeles, and it seemed to work well enough. I used to find roaches on a weekly basis prior to using it, and, afterwards, I never saw them in the garage again.

Of course, it's kind of like "this here rock keeps tigers away." I can't prove that the device itself kept them away, simply from their absence.

I would suggest using a combination of the ultrasonic device, a trap and poison to get rid of the rat(s) properly.
