I can't find anything definitive with google, so I'm asking here since I'm sure someone will know.

I have a Dell 1400SC which has a hardware maximum of 2GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade to that much but only if Windows NT 4 Server will support it. Does anyone know if NT4 Server supports 2GB of RAM?

Thanks in advance

Windows NT 4.0 Memory Support. With Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Server operating systems, the maximum amount of physical memory supported is 4 GB. The maximum amount of virtual memory is 2 GB.

From here.

Yes. The OS memory limit is based on a 32bit addressing. That's 4GB.

If I remember correctly the per process limit is 2GB, and the OS reserves the top 2GB for itself.

Dranko, you the man! That I'll teach me to walk away for 15 minuets during a reply.

BTW: Swap isn't limited to 2GB, it's 4GB. Without the /3GB switch each process is limited to a max memory usage of 2GB.

Thanks. I looked all over Microsoft NT4 pages and couldn't find that somehow.

I just know that Server 2003 Web Edition was limited to 1GB so I wanted to be sure.

Dredging up this thread since you obviously know your stuff Drakino and this is the place I trust for sysadmin type questions ...

I now have 2GB of RAM installed and running OK (after having to RMA 3 out of 4 sticks of it ). I have a task called DdsSchedNT.exe that is using 650megs of memory. I know it's a normal system task but I can't find any info via google or MSKB as to what it is or why it would use so much memory. So... do you know why?

Also why isn't all of my shiny new RAM being used for cache? According to performance under NT Task Manager I only have 40megs of physical memory allocated to file cache but over 1gig free. I was hoping this new RAM would take some load off the drives and be all used as cache (ala Linux). Does NT4 not do this?

Thanks again guys.
