I recently tried using the ID3 tag editor called MusicBrainz and it screw up most of the file names for my mp3s. What is the best batch tag editor so I can just change the filenames back to just the song title (but leaving the rest of the ID3 tag intact.)

Try Mp3 Tag Studio. It's free and will rename your entire collection in one step, as long as your tags are clean.

I bought Tag&Rename many years ago and every time I've emailed them about problems I have they fixed it. I've also emailed about feature requests like OGG, Flac support and a few others.

Ditto on MP3 Tag Studio, although I would go insane if all of my MP3s were only named by the song title. Oh well, to each his own.

I just wanted to chime in to recommend another piece of software to anyone who's looking, called The Rename. I am constantly using that program in conjunction with MP3 Tag Studio. It's the most powerful batch file renamer I've come across. Wait, it's the only batch file renamer I've come across. But it's still very powerful!

The Rename is very cool but have you seen PFrank? It has regular expression based search and replace.

Ummm... it isn't really free. It is shareware, and if you continue to use it past the evaluation time, you should pay Magnus the paltry $19 he asks for this great software, even though there are no time or usability limitations on the trial version.

Magnus Brading, the author of the software, is a member of this bbs (Magnus_Brading is his user name) although he hasn't posted anything in quite some time. Last time I "spoke" to him (via email) he said that he just didn't have time to visit here. I need to email him about a minor bug in the program, so I'll mention that we miss him!

Edit: I just upgraded to the latest beta (v.17) and the bug has been fixed, although no mention was made in the release notes. In case anybody cares, the bug was this: When using the "Mass Set Tags/Flags" feature, if a word in the song title contained an apostrophe, the first letter of the next word would remain lower case, even though the Mass Set instructions were to capitalize it. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I did mention this to Magnus some time ago, that's probably why it's fixed now.

Well, I think the "trial" version is supported by the little advertisement. When you register, you get rid of that advertisement.

I use Self Renamer. Works well enough for me and it has my favorite price: Free.

Haven't tried others, so I can't give a fair comparitive review.

Interesting, I'll give it a try (although The Rename has everything I need). I'm sorry, I guess my terminology is really bad, but what do you mean by "regular expression based search and replace"? The Rename lets you search and replace, which I is actually what I most use in conjunction with MP3 Tag Studio.

'Regular Expressions' are essentially wild-cards on steriods. The relevant Wikipedia article. HTH.

Does anyone know a good tag editor for Linux? Right know I'm using the godfather with WINE, but it's a little buggy.
