In my attic there's a Rio Central. I've used it briefly, but not recently, but we never really had space for it. I've not checked to see whether it still works, but, similar to Sipho, I'll put it up here for auction.

Here's the deal: highest bid here by the end of October gets the item. Buyer pays postage separately. You can either give the money to RobS (and show me proof), or you can give me the money (and I'll prove that I gave it to RobS) for the fund.

Bids in GBP. Payment in that day's equivalent in USD, CAD or EUR. Long-standing BBS members only, otherwise I'd have gone through eBay.

I also have a replacement power supply which might be useful if it suffers from PSU whine.

People might be more likely to bid if you can confirm whether its in working order and what condition its in. At the moment its worth £20 to me!

Yeah, that means I've got to get it out of the attic, though! I'll dig it out at the weekend.

I remember the one and only time I saw one in use, in an acoustic music restaurant/venue in Philadelphia, serenading the bar. I started chatting up the bartender about how I had one of those in my car, but he only half understood.

Regardless, it's worth 50 pounds for Rob to me.

It's more-or-less pristine, but a little bit dusty. I had to tear open the plastic bag that the remote control is in. It boots; it plays music. I didn't check whether it rips or not, because I don't have the USB/Ethernet adapter needed for CDDB lookups.

It has ripped successfully in the past, because there's 4 CDs on there which I'd forgotten about.

It does suffer from the PSU whine problem, but I'll dig out the replacement PSU which solves that.

Hi Roger,

how hard is it to replace the PSU?

Assuming that the replacement I have _does_ stop the whine (Hugo?, Peter?), it's easy: you open the case (4 or 5 screws), and then there's 4 screws mounting the PSU PCB to the case, and a couple of molex connectors.

Actually, I might just do it myself this week at some point...

I don't know how to tell whiny from non-whiny ones by sight.

The case doesn't open with screws. It has Vulcan Nerve Pinch catches on the seam, about 1/4 and 3/4 of the way down each side. I've never managed to open mine, thought Hugo always made it look easy.

Edit: Whoops, I take that back. There's six screws and a Vulcan Nerve Pinch. I've just succeeded in opening it: on mine the easiest catch to pop first was the right front one, about 3in along the seam.

Once you're inside, replacing the PSU is simple and obvious.

I have personally swapped out a whiny PSU for a non-whiny PSU on a central, so I know that both types do exist.

...and if you don't have one of these, there's bads of room for a generic +12v / +5v PSU (it makes all its other rails from these voltages). Do check the voltages coming out of the PSU before replacing it though, ISTR there was some heinous silkscreen mislabelling on the central main board (like 12v labeled as 5v and vice versa or something). Might have just been the dev units though... even though they maybe outnumbered the production ones

I suspect +12v/+5v @ enough to power HDD and CDROM (then add 500mA to each for the main board/display power) would do fine.

Last day. You've got 8 hours until the end of October (obviously I was going to use GMT), otherwise dr_dos gets it for £100.

Although, that does make my life easier, 'cos I only have to ship it to Europe...
