Should I expect the transmission rate of a large file to be the same when it is sent to a samba shared folder vs. when it is sent to a folder shared via netatalk?

File sent to smb share goes at about 4MB/sec.
File sent via netatalk transfers at about 10MB/sec.

The 10MB/sec number seems reasonable because the MBP is connecting via wireless at 130mb/s.

My MBP wireless file copy speeds can be at or over 10MB/s to an SMB share when I am in clear line of site and relatively close (in the same room, 8 feet away) from the base station.

I can't speculate why you're seeing less than half the rate from SMB.

What's the server? SMB does impose more load on the server than Appletalk does, and if the server is a slightly feeble ARM-based NAS then it might be significant. When I worked at ANT, with all RiscOS clients and all Windows servers, we still used Appletalk -- a protocol native to neither client nor server -- for file sharing, as it was the fastest.

Weak would describe this server, it's one of these running Ubuntu.
