Just to let people know I've been playing around with the possibility of using Street Atlas as a source for the data gpsapp gets. It seems like it's possible, Street Atlas can export a simple text file that contains the route points, but exporting the text directions and turn points seems a little harder. I'm thinking a way to do it might be to write an application to emulate a Garmin GPS. Street Atlas exports waypoints, track data and some text to Garmin GPS's so if one were to write a program to emulate a Garmin you could take this data and transform it to the data GPSApp wants fairly easy I think.
I started on a simple program to emulate a garmin last night, but the Garmin protocol is not simple.
Anyone have any comments on whether this would be useful or not?
BTW: One possible ugh would be the text directions Street Atlas is exporting to the garmin would still suck since, Garmins have a limit of like 6 characters on waypoint names. So one might have to do some manual typing to accomplish all this well.

Need a GPS emulator for Street Atlas?? Well, howabout this: GPS Emulator
Solves some of the problems people have had with Street Atlas and Garmin GPSs. Dunno if there is source available, but it outputs it as a RTE map format if it helps.

Yes! Very cool been looking for something that does this a long while. Now I will attempt to make a program to do the data conversion and see how it works with GPSApp. Thanks for the info.

No prob.. was looking for an app to emulate a Garmin, but the other way around.. IE, I wanted something that made a PC act like a GPS, to test out GpsApp..

On the PC.. Basicly, if the PC can hook up to the Empeg over serial, it can act like a GPS. I'm borrowing a GPS now, but it would be handy for testing out stuff while inside..

Heh.. Connect Empeg via serial to PC, run GPS Emulator on PC, that makes GpsApp think the PC is a GPS.

Heh.. True.. If I recall, Knoppix can setup a permenant storage partition to store configuration/applications.. Or maybe it can just install itself. Will have to look into it, as I'd really like to have a *nix install anyway, just can't stand having my machine get borked whenever I try to install one..
