Ok, I failed to check the FAQ on display removal, and as a consequence have broken the connector on the back of the display (and blown one or two mainboard fuses, but thats another thread)
The rear of the crimp connector has snapped in half, and the other half of the connector which is permanently connected to the board is also slightly damaged - cracked at the corner. See attached pics.
Electrically, everything works now I have pushed the cable back onto the connector. Obviously this isn't a permanent fix though - half a mile down the road and the cable would vibrate loose.
Can anyone recommend a permanent repair method - hot glue maybe? Or is a replacement cable the only way to go?
