I was trying to upload some new music and I got irq timeout on the display. So I logged into the console to run a fsck. I ran it on /dev/hda4 and it came back clean. Then I ran it on /dev/hdc4 and I ran into the irq errors.

I'm using hijack 440 prebuilt by Mike Comb with ext3 support on my MKII.

Below is the capture of the boot and the fsck. Does this look like a bad hard drive or something worse? What is hdb? I haven't done Linux admin in about 3 years, but I seem to remember that hda1 where "a" is the drive enumeration and "1" is the partition enumeration. Why is the Toshiba drive set to hdb while booting, but the /drive1 comes from hdc?

Because we cheated, to make things the same between Mark 1 (which has hda and hdc) and Mark 2 (which has hda and hdb). The second drive in a Mark 2 "is" hdb, but the device nodes /dev/hdc* are the ones which would normally refer to hdb.


You should enable swap ("swapon /swapfile") before running fsck, you'll get out-of-memory errors like that one otherwise. However, that's not your main problem; it couldn't cause those IRQ errors. Either the second drive is failing, or -- much more likely -- there's a problem with the IDE cable, perhaps where it's attached to the second drive. Dismantle the player and check all the connections are bedded-in properly.

Ah....the little things you forget when you haven't logged into the console of your empeg in a couple years.


I've replaced the cable before, but it was mailed to me from support. Do you know where to get a pre-made one now, or do I have to find a laptop one and cut it down? Either way, I'll take it appart when I get home from work and just double check the seating.

Don't forget to check the IDE header connector on the mainboard for dry joints - link.

Eutronix has replacement IDE cables.

I took the unit apart. I checked for dry joints (thanks AndrewT) by using a multi-meter and testing connectivity from the tip of the solder to the top of the pin. All pins checked out.

I then used a small mallet and beat the connectors on the ide cable together to make sure the connectors were making good contact with the wire. Then I reseated everything, obviously since I had to pull the cable to beat on it.

After putting it back together, I ran the fsck again and it came back with a lot of bad blocks. The drive is probably going bad as well, but it looks like the reseating everything fixed the irq issue, at least for now. I haven't had time to add songs or do any write tests. The fsck didn't finish last night so I had to put the player back together this morning so I could have music on the way to work.
