Hi guys.

Can someone please advise on a problem? I installed Mark's Hijack version 419 yesterday. Put the player in the car for the drive to work this morning and got some errors, although I think this may be coincedence. Music kept pausing and an error like "hda irq timeout" or similar kept flashing on the display. I can't recall the exact error and, as you'll see below, I can't boot the player to make a note of it.

The player would recover from these errors and continue playing. Wondered if I had a HDD failing (I have 2x10GB) and so I brought the player indoors this evening to investigate via hyperterminal.

Unfortunately, since I powered up the player indoors, I've had "segfault error" flashing up for a split second being replaced with "sigkill error" whilst the player reboots continuously. I connected via hyperterminal and got the following text capture (it rebooted twice I think before I pulled the plug and killed the capture):

Can anyone shed light on this please? If it is just a HDD, I can replace and upload all my songs again without too much hassle as I keep a copy on my PC, but I noticed some memory errors in that text and now I'm worried.

As an aside, I reinstalled the v2.0 final developer image and Hijack 419 before getting the above capture. It had no effect on the symptoms. I should also mention that the unit had no problems like this (music pausing, etc) before today.

What version of hijack were you using before ugradeing? Have you tried going back to that and seeing if it works or does the same? Have any 3rd party software running on it? Just a couple ideas of what I would check. Im sure the real brains around here will be in shortly.

Your player software is crashing. Sometimes this is due to a corrupted tune.

I think the usual "fix" is to wipe the flash savearea, by manually using Control^C to kill the player, and then restarting it with the flag (??) to tell it to reset its saved settings.

But for your case, I think I'd like you to try a Hijack fix for it.. I'll release Hijack kernel v420 shortly (in a few minutes, at the link above). This version of Hijack automatically attempts to clear only the current playlist setting when the player crashes, rather than all of the player's settings. Let me know if it solves the problem or not (by posting here).

Usually the temporary fix is to start the player with no playlist as described here. That'll prevent the player app from crashing immediately, but won't solve the basic problem which is that he was getting hard disk error messages.

Hijack v420 has no obvious effect. It's still rebooting ad infinum with the same hijack messages flashing up.

In answer to the 1st reply, I did try initially reverting back to hijack 417, but it just rebooted with no error messages, but it did take slightly longer to reboot. I noticed that it had lost it's position and wasn't showing a current playlist just before it rebooted.

When I was getting the hda messages earlier, they were appearing on several different tracks, so I don't think it's one specific song that's causing the errors.

Tony, your temporary fix of starting the player with the player -i switch worked, I have now managed to boot the empeg without the looping reboots - thanks.

Soooo. Do I have a hard disk on the way out? Is there any way to find out which one?

Damn.

Mark, what did your 419/420 error messages mean? The brief flash of the "segfault error" and then the longer "sigkill error" whilst the unit was rebooting. Just after the reboot, it would flash the "segfault" again before being replaced with "sigkill".

I have now selected several playlists at random, including one that gave me a hda error yesterday, so far with no problems / errors. I will go out in the car later, as I'm off-shift, and do a more thorough test.

Those errors indicated the player was getting confused internally.

This could have been due to a corrupted playlist or track, or due to hard drive read errors (Faulty cable, shoddy soldering of IDE header, etc..). The hard drive errors may come and go with temperature changes, vibration, dumb luck, etc..

Hmm, thanks for that.

The IDE cable has been replaced, although it was a little while ago so I suppose it could be faulty again, and the soldering on my IDE header was done early last year to a reasonable standard, again I suppose it could be that, but it seems (hopefully) unlikely.

My field test yesterday yielded no unexpected results, so, a result in itself! The Empeg behaved perfectly, as it usually does. I selected a bunch of different playlists, including ones that had given me errors a couple of days ago, and no problems arose.

Hopefully whatever was troubling the unit has gone away for the moment.

Thanks for your help guys, it was much appreciated! Even if the root cause wasn't identified, I have a useable Empeg again at least for the moment.
