HD and Ethernet woes

My main player has been getting the 'No Harddisc' error more and more recently. I initally suspected the HD as it's been in since I first had the player and has had it's fair share of knocks and bumps. So I just bought a new 100GB drive and tried installing that. Now, it's been literally 'years' since I looked at the boot log or added any music to it. Upon connecting I found it had the following in the boot log: Code:
ide_data_test: wrote 0x0000 read 0x8080 ide_data_test: wrote 0xffff read 0x8080 ide_data_test: wrote 0xaaaa read 0x8080
(I actually stole this from someone else's post so the numbers aren't the same) I also connected the ethernet up for the first time in a long time and found that inop too. A further inspection of the boot log revealed: Code:
smc chip id/revision 0x0249 smc_init couldn't find card
So it looks like it can't find the network chip. Could this arise from a dry joint or damaged pin on the IDE header? If so, does anyone have a part number for a suitable replacement header? I can get it replaced at work.

1. When things fail, the exact numbers in the IDE data test boot log *matter*.
2. The header never needs replacing. But it often does need to be soldered down properly.

Okay, IDE bus is fine. Maybe post the entire boot log now, and we'll see about the other devices from that.

Okay, it mostly all looks normal except for that bit about the smc ethernet chip.
In your first posting, you wrote a different value for the "smc chip id/revision" line. Was that correct?
Does it now always give 0x3349 for you?
Here's the "normal" output from one of my Mk2a players:
Quote: Code:
hda: FUJITSU MHT2080AT, 76319MB w/8192kB Cache, CHS=9729/255/63 empeg-flash driver initialized smc chip id/revision 0x3349 smc9194.c:v0.12 03/06/96 by Erik Stahlman ([email protected])
SMC9194: SMC91C94(r:9) at 0x4008000 IRQ:7 INTF:TP MEM:6144b MAC 00:02:d7:22:07:ea
The detection/initialization code (in linux/drivers/net/smc9194_tifon.c) is rather difficult for me to follow, so I'm not sure exactly why it first sees the chip (0x3349) and then later decides that there's no chip present (?).
But one could instrument that code (add a bunch of printk() lines to see exactly where it bops out) to get a better idea of what the trouble might be.
There's nothing definitive there yet.
Cheers

Yes, it always returns 0x3349 now. Must've been a typo, had to copy that bit over by hand.
Well, i've just got my empeg dev environment together and I've just sucessfully rolled and installed a new kernel (my version prints a swear word in the boot log). So I'll have a look at the code tomorrow and stick a load of printk()'s in.

I'm wondering wether there is a fault with the IDE header.... This is what happens when I put the good disk on the other connector of the drive cable.... Code:
If there is anyone present who wants to upgrade the flash, let them speak now, or forever hold their peace...it seems not. Let fly the Penguins of Linux!
