can i compile a kernel with red hat 9? The last time i compiled a kernel was with red hat 7, and i had to format that machine a long time ago.

I see no reason you couldn't. What leads you to believe you can't?

Oh, wait. Was that the version of RedHat where they intentionally shipped the buggy compiler? ISTR that you could get another compiler package marked explicitly for compiling the kernel. If this is the case, the ``normal'' compiler will be 3.something whereas the kernel compiler will be 2.something, IIRC.

I just figured a newer version would probably cause some sort of problem along the lines. I'm most likely trying to do something way over my head, but there is only one way to find out
