I'm listening to a song in playlist A. I want to use the playlist selector to select a song and have it essentially "inserted" after the song I'm listening to, not supplanting it.

Basically I have a heirarchical tree of artist/album which makes this a much more useful way to browse if I know the artist and not the song name, than search.

Unless there's something I'm missing...

This is in the FAQ, under "Insert/append from playlists menu". Note that you need version 2.0 on your player.

I'm an idiot. I even read it and failed to parse that it was exactly what I wanted

Well, except it requires me to not use the remote (unless it happens that press and hold the OK button will work; I should try that).

There's a story: my right knee sucks and the bucket seat in the minivan sits high, so I have to bend it. In order to minimize that, I keep the seat all the way back. I can reach the wheel just fine, but I have to lean forward to reach the empeg. Hence, I always drive with the remote in my hand.

I drove all the way to Trenton from Pittsburgh (via Maryland due to a problem on the PA Turnpike) and then back a day later with the remote in my hand, including during rain through the narrow stretches where the lanes are currently narrowed and surrounded by jersey barriers due to construction. Of course, I also didn't take the hand with the remote in it off the wheel during those stretches, but...

You can also do a search by playlist, in "insert" mode.

Yes, but only if you have a Rio Remote, doesn't work with the kenwood remote.

I don't want to insert the whole list, just one song, but it's easier to do it by browsing the playlist.

I suppose I should see how this works... now, where's my AC adapter?

Tony FAQmeister - perhaps the FAQ entry should mention that playlist insert/append/replace works with a long-press of Menu on the Rio remote? It's not obvious unless you're like me (and dabrashear) and try these things. Perhaps something like "(or press and hold the menu button on a Rio-branded remote)" at the end of the relevant sentence?

What kind of fool do I look like?

I also picked up an extra remote so if either of the ones that came with my units gets damaged I won't be totally screwed.

It does. I quote directly from that FAQ entry:

"Note that the Menu/OK button on the Rio Remote also works for this trick (you can press and hold it). The Kenwood remote does not work for this trick, though, since its DNPP button doesn't have a "hold" option."

It works for both songs and playlists.

It does. I quote directly from that FAQ entry

I'm looking at http://www.riocar.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=4#32

I see that text in "Go back to last playlist menu" and not "Insert/append from playlists menu."

Doh! I looked several times to see whether that was mentioned!

I read

Navigate to Rush/Hemispheres/La Villa Strangiato (perhaps using the quick menu trick above). With the song name highlighted, press and hold the bottom button on the faceplate. Another menu will appear, giving you the option to Insert, Append, or Replace.

The text you quoted was from the preceding sub-entry, which a reader may have skipped on their way. Perhaps change my suggestion to "(or using Rio remote - see above)" or something.
