This is probably something more well suited to a dedicated developer/hacker than being an actual empeg project...

As long as you've got a Linux box in the car, why not monitor your OBD2 as well? This is probably more a matter of putting existing technology together than designing something new. I'm thinking along the lines of getting an OBD2 -> PC serial device (what do those cost? $200?) and compiling a linux set of monitoring tools for the ARM. Then maybe setup triggers that can play pre-recorded error message mp3 files.

Sound feasible? Yeah, it'd prolly be expensive :( Am I overlooking some reason why this can't be done?

If you look at the DIY-EFI effort, they already have an OBD-II interface design for this. You'd need to have a background daemon running to monitor the serial data, plus you'd need to have a pretty good understanding of the protocol to write the daemon.

Otherwise, it sounds like a good idea - projects section?
