Sort of a bug...

Well, after a week without an empeg in the car, i finally got a free second and pulled out the sled and found that one of the white RCA wires had pulled out of the docking connector.

I hadn't been using the empeg because at random times or when i would hit a bump, incredibly loud (no matter how loud the volume was on the empeg) pops and hisses would nearly blow my ears out. When i pushed or bumped the front of the unit when this was happening, sometimes it would stop, so i figured it was the docking connector.

When i pulled the sled out and gave it a good once over, i found 2 other wires that were about to pull loose, so i just soldered em all while i was at it.

So, my question, is this covered under warranty? I'd kinda like a new docking connector seeing as how i don't trust my soldering skills all that much (those tiny slits where hard to get solder into without melting the plastic), and since my 1 year is about up, i'd hate to have more wires come loose after i'm out of warranty range.

thanks.

Assuming that this is the "known problem" with some of the docking connectors, then yes, they'll send you a new one if you e-mail them.

Yes, it will be covered by warranty, although we like to get the old ones back. Your old one may not be much use to us if you've tried to solder THROUGH the plastic shell. The idea is that you remove the pins first

heheh, i tried to get the pins out, but in doing so bent one and didn't wanna attempt any others out of fear of ruining it totally. =] I probably should have asked how to get the pins out, but i couldn't live without music on the long drive to work for one more day, and i'm an impatient bastard on top of it. heh. It works though! No more poppin'. So, i'd be happy to send back the connector in trade for a new one, if you'd still want it. I'll email support manana. Thanks guys.

What does the "known problem"... sound like? Could it sound like the right speakers being louder than the left ones? I am having such a problem and I already replaced the ones on the left, with no success. So, before I keep on opening and closing my car's door panels to find out what's wrong, I just wanted to check if this could be the problem. Is there a way to test if it is?

Thak you guys,

Taym

The "known problem" is that some early releases of the docking connectors had been put together with slightly-less-than-optimum crimps on the pins connected to the wires. This resulted in some of the wires pulling out of the connector during installation.

If you are having a L/R balance problem, it is true that wiring issues might be the cause. But carefully check all wiring, not just the docking connector. Also, it could be the amplifier or the signal cables. Make sure to check everything. You did play with the balance and the fader already, right?

I did. This thing is driving me crazy. What seemed to be affected by the problem was just the tweeter. But that was hard to say, honesly. I replaced the one on the left, and after several tests it seemed to be working fine. Than I became softer than the right one again, than, today, I started to just touch the wiring behind the sled and after a while it seamed to be working properly again. Still, I don't know exactly where is the problem, but much likely is there, somewhere. Is it possible that only the threble are being affected by the "known problem"?

Sounds like you may have a problem with your crossover - I'd check this first.

I will, and let you know. But, theorietically, could that be due to the problem with the sled? I have few doubts about it, since I would assume that if the problem was with the docking cables than the woofer too should be going softer... Or am I worng?

You're very unlikely to loose volume on one channel due to a wiring fault.

Crackles and/or no audio indicate a connection problem, not reduced volume. It's a high impedance (low current) circuit, it won't degrade the signal.

Ok, I understand. I'll check the crossover. Thank you again!
