Most don't bother, as there's a rather nice Java implementation in Jemplode (linked from the top of this page).

However, it requires that the 2.0 beta software already be installed on the player, and the software upgrader only works in Windows with the serial port. So you might wanna try getting at least the software upgrader working in WINE and let us know how it goes.
