If I was feeling rather abitious, I would extract digital audio to WAV files all day and write a massive DOS batch file to run l3enc (the best encoder at the time, in my opinion) to encode, rename, and organize all the songs.

My "Jack" utility at my home page does precisely that. It supports L3enc and LAME by default, or any command line encoder you want to throw at it.

Hardly ever use it any more, but for a while, that's how I did it. Ripped track01 track02 etc. for several albums during the day, then let the encoder run batches overnight.
