I think what you're saying is that the box allows you to sort either the on-screen view that you get in Emplode (the same thing as clicking on the colum headers in Emplode), and it also allows you to change the track's sorting order in the playlist as they're stored on the Empeg (the same as dragging them up and down in the list to change their "position" number).

Basically, if you would like the listing in the empeg to be by artist, you modify the playlist order using this box. Very nifty.
