Health Department officials in Northland have refused to confirm that a large swarm of unusually aggressive bees is moving from the Hokianga Harbour towards the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The swarm, which is estimated to contain at least a thousand bees, exhibit unusual behaviour after having gathered and ingested pollen from illegal marijuana crops in the Far North. Officials in Kaitaia were quick to say the bees were not related to the swarms of Killer Bees which moved up into the southern United States from Mexico, but that because their behaviour was erratic the public should take no chances if encountering a swarm. "They act in what can only be described as a paranoid state," said a DoC worker yesterday. "They start flying in one direction then suddenly appear to change their minds like they forgot what they were intending to do. The only thing that's slowing their progress is they seem to have to stop and feed constantly and that's giving us additional time to prepare."
