The HBO HD movies look almost like film (and I'm not even sure they're not downrez'ed) and the live events pretty much look like you're looking through a window at them.
HBO has their own High def telecine equipment. So when you watch a widescreen movie on HBOhd, it's probably one that they scanned into 1080i themselves at full rez.
The thing is, your projector is doing some digital squishing of those images. It doesn't have 1080 lines of resolution itself, so it's doing some of its own downsampling to get the images onto the screen.
If only the HD TiVo would come out
