Interesting note on the size increase ... I'll check to see if I can specify a compression setting on the jar command and get it down a little smaller.

You can't with Sun's jar command AFAIK, but there are some third party tools out there that will let you create a more compressed jar that should still be fully compatible. A google search turned up a few things when I was looking into this a while back.
