While waiting to obtain a new handle, I wonder if you couldn't kluge together some sort of (ugly) repair that would at least restore functionality.

If you were to get some small diameter copper tubing that would just fit over the broken ends of the handle, you might (with a little epoxy and maybe a bit of light hammering to "form" the tubing to the cross sectional shape of the handle) be able to make the old handle work.
