Reminds me of a Sunday comics cartoon strip, "The Born Loser" from many years ago:

A homeless man comes up to the front door of a rich man's house to beg for money. The rich man tells him, "I'll pay you a hundred dollars to paint my porch. You can find the paint and brushes out back." The poor man comes back later to tell him it's all done, "and by the way, your car's not a Porch, it's a Mercedes."

Oh, and Doug, being non-pop-music-savvy, we should probably explain... The comment about "friends driving Porsches" is a reference to an old song:

"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz
My friends all drive Porsches, and I must make amends..."

Anyone have the name of the songwriter handy?
