Actually, if you fit the link wires between the capacitors on the top and the bottom, it's not necessary (assuming you're referring to the gnd hole on the botom left of the memory board), hence it's not mentioned.

I could put in an explicit 'it is not necessary to connect to this pad' line.


But then you have to remove the following sentence after mounting the board:
Also check that there IS continuity beteen the GND hole and a convenient ground point (such as the shield of the serial port connector)

Because at this point there is no continuity, that's why I though a seperate ground patch wire is neccessary.
