Remember that this chip (and the ethernet controller) are on the same bus as the IDE controller. There have been a few cases where it's just a matter of checking & fixing the bus and everything comes back.

A touch more complicated than fixing the IDE header, but not a disaster. It is a job for someone comfortable/compentent with surface mount soldering, but likely not something only the big guns can fix.
