Apparently it's different in the UK -- as with many things. See, for example, the picture on the right on this page.

You can see the waste pipe leaving the pan and going horizontally to the wall, where (presumably) the waste pipe is hidden. If you look closely, you can see a ring where the porcelain is mated with the plastic. This is the bit we need to seal.

What I want to know is if I need any specific kind of sealant for this, or will normal cured-rubber bathroom sealant work?
