I'm 99% sure that Apple's FireWire 800 can accept both FW800 and FW400 protocols and can accept both 9-pin FW800 cables and 6-pin FW400 cables. Unless you have one of those tiny 4-pin FW400 cables, you shouldn't need any adapter, and the 4-to-6-pin adapters are easy to come by.
