Well, you've forgotten to add in the 'hidden' cost of time away from work... which can be severely limiting.
The last 'pleasure trip' abroad that I did was a 'summer' of hitchhiking through Europe in '89. I didn't return until 92(!), so I know how much fun there is to be had with no constraints at home.
