Yes Downsizer has run really very well. Our admin guy is pretty good at php and has written a few hacks, we've looked at moving away at several points but in the end we've stayed with it because there are hacks for virtually everything you might want to do (as long as you're competent enough to manually re-hack files at upgrade time).

He's also used phpBB for his free forum system www.myfreeforum.org which hosts a huge number of fora and users with no significant issues.
