I'm hoping the trick will be useful in another situation. I've been regularly getting an automated phone call that I think is from a bill collector who's got an old number for someone. It goes something like "This is an important and private message for Mercurio So-and-So. If you are not Mercurio So-and-So, hang up now. If this is you, then please call such-and-such right away..."
Anyhoo, my phone is programmable to silence the ring based on incoming callerID number, so at least my phone doesn't RING when that call comes in. But it frequently results in an extra answering machine message that I keep checking and then deleting. Hopefully this trick will make that call disconnect before the answering machine picks up.
