What's the server? SMB does impose more load on the server than Appletalk does, and if the server is a slightly feeble ARM-based NAS then it might be significant. When I worked at ANT, with all RiscOS clients and all Windows servers, we still used Appletalk -- a protocol native to neither client nor server -- for file sharing, as it was the fastest.
