The searches were set to use "MySQL's Full-Text Search", and that seems to be limiting it. I tried switching to the "UBBThreads Internal" search feature, and it made the site not respond due to I/O wait skyrocketing.

I'll have to dig deeper to see what needs to change to let MySQL full-text search work with 3 character words.
