There is at least one third-party GPS project under development (by Kim Salo), but it has not been released and is only being developed in his spare time.

You will probably be better served by a dedicated GPS system with a large screen. The empeg/Rio car player is meant to store/play music (your entire CD collection all at once, in fact), and it excels at that job.
