1GB was a special number for me, too. The first widely available and affordable IDE drive of that capacity was the Quanum Fireball 1GB, which also happened to implement the IDE DMA command set. I immediately grabbed one, and hacked Linux to support IDE DMA. Life took a large fork from that point forward.
