Very good points. I'll have to measure the energy usage of my Synology sometime to see what it's doing now.

Currently, the cost to replicate the storage I have now with SSDs would be over $4500 for just the drives. That's compared to $390 for the same in HDDs. I'm pretty sure it'll take quite a long time to spend $4110 in energy costs. SSD prices are going to have to come down by orders of magnitude.

FYI, here's the numbers I was using:

- my NAS has four drives of 3, 3, 3, and 4 TB
- I was using the cost of 3 4TB SSDs
- either way, I end up with 8TB of usable space
