It's true that no one's going to be able to publish a tool that gains universal popularity, and everyone that offers free services is only in it for your data.

The only social media I use are a couple of forums so I'm atypical (even for a 53 year old) but I'm concerned that tech firms know more about my kids than I do.

I'd love to see a way of managing what data you allow access to.

I know it'd be in the form of another layer but would it be that bad? There are various apps that are bringing centralised access to banking across providers, this (or another service) could be similar?
