I doubt it's a tuner connection problem (ie, wires from tuner to main unit) as if any of the essential wires are gone:

- Data TX/RX: won't find tuner module
- Signal strength: won't get any signal strength indicated
- Signal: won't hear anything at all

Do you have a "bee sting" antenna? If so, you really need an antenna power adaptor, which you need if you fit any aftermarket stereo to an audi/vw. This supplies power to the antenna amp in the base of the bee sting; without this, the radio sounds awful in my new beetle.
