Sounds like time for replacement. :-(

You may be able to find 6 x 9s in a 7 x 10 plate or adapter. Good luck, whatever you choose.

I would imagine the nail polish trick would be kinda temporary, if teh surround is brittle enough to split, it may get worse in other places. At least it'll give you OK sound until you find a replacement.
