I've done this with my empeg at work. I've got my own radio station on my empeg as a friend had a TONS of CDs all of them where the top 100 billboards for every year so he let me rip them and I put them on my empeg. Basicly any song I can think of has been on the top 100 so now I have it. He had the top 100 from 1959-2000 then the top 50 from 1955-58 and top 30s from 1950-54. Needless to say the empeg is full but I love going threw some of the older years and playing songs and bringing back good ol memories. Yes there are some good uses for play by year but in my case they also had to guess what number it was on the billboard charts for that year. Lots of fun.
