If you don't need the head unit (for CD or radio) don't bother using one.

Otherwise start comparing the top models of Clarion, Alpine, Eclipse, Mcintosh, Nakamichi, Denon, etc. The top models should be completely amp-free.

Then you still have a choice of using either the empeg or the head unit as your preamp.
