I lost the remote control that came with the empeg. I tried ordering a replacement from sonicblue awhile back, but they are sold out.

Any good ideas for a replacement remote? I mostly use my empeg in my car.

The empeg originally used a Kenwood KCA-R6A which is widely available as an aftermarket / spare part. You'll lose some of the more advanced features compared to the Rio remote. Check out the button guide for the details.

...Kenwood KCA-R6A...

A much better choice IMHO is the Kenwood KCA-RC600, available from Crutchfield for $24.95.

The only function I have found lacking in this remote is the "Info" button (there may be other lesser known functions I have missed) and the remote is both more ergonomic and much harder to misplace.

Note that if you leave the remote on the passenger seat and put a camera bag on top of it, your empeg may exhibit unusual behavior!

Hi, would i need to change any settings or do anything special to get the remote( KCA-RC600) to work or will it work right out of the box?

Alot of the bottons work, but you might have to do a little bit of tweaking to get the bottons exactly the way you want them, since they wont be so clearly marked like the rio remote. Its pretty basic thing to do.

might wanna check out these auctions

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1361036143 - Cant beat the price, great remore i used it for 2 weeks, when i lost my rio remote.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1361565185 - decent remote, but too big for me, i like small ones, ive used it with the empeg and works fine with some hijacking.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1361205581 - just an over-all wired remote, but it dose work, its too retro for me to really use.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1361594550 - im a sucker for credit card remotes so of course i love this one flawless, i think this is what orginally shipped with them.

thats it for kenwood, there are a few other brand but kenwoods i have had the most luck with getting to work with the unit, i tried liek 40 remotes, when i used to work at good guys they have piles of them in the back, i just like to see what i can get to work, my goal is to find a smaller backlit remote, maybe credit card size

It'll work right out of the box.

If you buy one, email me and I will send you an overlay that you can attach to the top of the remote that relabels the buttons to show their actual functions.

Yeah, I'm still using that overlay you've sent me Doug. It really made life easier using the remote, 'cause some buttons work differently than with the original Rio remote. (thinking especially of "search" now)
I can't thank you enough for it!

Wow...the people on this forum never cease to amaze me. Is there anyway I can get an overlay as well? I have a second remote that is a kenwood, and would love to have the actual functions on the control instead of the defaults. Thanks.

justinlarson, ElectricD7 (and anybody else who is interested --

Sure. Just email me or PM me with your address and I'll drop them in the mail to you. I can't send them electronically -- they're in a format you won't be able to read or convert.

These are for the KCA-RC600 remote, are printed on a color laser printer and there are nine overlays in different color combinations on the page.

Don't get your expectations too high -- they are printed on plain paper and they just attach crudely over the face of the remote with clear tape -- but they are legible, and they work.

Waiting for my computer to finish compiling, I thought I would have a look here...

If I remember correctly, Doug once told me it's in AMI pro format.

No, I haven't posted a picture of it before. But attached to this thread is a .jpg I just threw together with the Windows Paint program, showing approximately what it looks like although it is not drawn to scale. The page of overlays that I would mail to anybody who wants one is accurate within a few thousandths of an inch, and has nine different overlays in varying color combinations.

If anybody has a KCA-R600 remote and knows how to operate it better than I do mine (an easy requirement!) and has suggestions for additional or different wording on this overlay, please let me know!

Doug, what format is that overlay in?

It is in Ami Pro 3.1, a program copyrighted in 1988 so it is not your state of the art word processor and most modern word processors, even though they say they will import Ami Pro files, won't really do it if the original Ami Pro file is complex, with frames embedded within frames, graphics, and tables. This document has all of that.

I have emailed it to you so you can play with it... have fun!

I stick with Ami Pro because it is such a tight, efficient program that it loads, ready to type, in less than one second after clicking the icon; and being totally frame based it is worthy of being called a lightweight desktop publisher. I can do things with it that would be difficult in Microsoft Word. And while it doesn't have really necessary things like being able to automatically generate and italicize an alphabetical list of citations for a bibliography (or something just as weird and utterly overkill that Word probably can do) it does *everything* I want it to do.

Yeah, I admit it -- I am a grumpy curmudgeonly old Luddite. Deal with it!

No, I think that...

it loads, ready to type, in less than one second after clicking the icon

...means you're optimizing your time properly and not giving in to marketing hype. I don't think that's being a luddite, it's being wise.

Hi.

OK, after telling Doug how to do it, he kindly produced a Postscript version of the overlay. Actually he simply printed to file using a postscript print driver under Windows (after he did set one up). Many thanks for doing this Doug.

I took advantage of his generous act and produced a PNG version that more people should be able to use as well as a PDF version. All three versions (PS,PDF and PNG) are available at http://www.incase.de/files/KWRemote/. Feel free to download it from there and print it yourself.

For those that would like to download the PostScript version, it is also attached to this post (all other files are around 400kB and thus too large to attach).

cu,
sven

PS: I should really update my BBS profile image, that one looks horrible.

Hi, I picked up the kenwood RC600 remote. I looked at the Hi jack guide for changing the button preeses to do what i want but i need an" idiot" guide that i can follow.BTW the IR translation guide says to open the edit config file in Emplode.I didnt see how to do that in Emplode.Id like to be able to access Hijack from the remote and turn the info screen on/off as well as use the "hold down" search feature and select mode.Basically i want it to do everything the original remote does just in an easier to hold/use remote.Keep in mind that im somewhat "challenged" in computer stuff lingo. Anybody .Thanks

FAQ entry for editing config.ini is here.

I don't know what "IR Translation Guide" you were looking at, but whoever maintains it should probably link that entry there.
