I received confirmation from digikey yesterday that all
of the components needed to build a sled connector had been shipped. Apparently they have them all in stock now for those of you that wish to build a connector.

What part does digikey make? Is it the actual plastic piece on the sled with all the wiring?

If it's not too much trouble, could you please post all of the part numbers you ordered?

Cool I tried to get some from the original manufacturer and they were not very responsive. So like he said could you please post all the relevant information for ordering these?

As odd as it may seem. I don't have the part numbers. I ordered these parts by using a link from the board. Those links don't work any more. I did receive the housing yesterday. It is Digi-Key part number H10109-ND and is the correct part. As the other items come in I will list the part numbers sorry.

It looks like these are the Digikey P/N's:
H10109-ND Connector shell
H10085-ND Power Pins (2 per connector)
H10087-ND Signal Pins (22 per connector)

And here is Hirose's datasheet...

Cheers,
Phil

That company, Hirose, is the same one I tried to buy from directly, but they would not respond to my emails. It is awesome you found a dealer for these parts. Good work!

I can't take credit for finding Digikey, you have to thank Neutrino for that (thanks!). I just looked up the P/N's and put up some links...

Cheers

I can't take the credit either. The availablitliy of these parts was first posted by Shonky I believe. Thank you for relisting the part numbers!

It was me originally and I did originally order some from Digikey but cancelled after I got a much better price here in Oz - MOQ was higher though. Also their 4-6 week lead time was obviously a little bit pessimistic.

That's what started the whole connector/harness buy. I am still away on business at the moment so don't have much time to check in here for a while. I should be back in Oz by the end of the week and will start to organize the actual buy. I am still on the hunt for suitable fuseholder and filter and possibly also the tuner connector, although I think they might be a bit of a lost cuase and I will supply the fues holder only and no tuner connector.

and besides which Paticks new tuner won't come with a connector - just a flying lead (to the best of my knowledge anyway).

Wasn't it that he was going to just have leads coming out of the box with the connectors on the end instead of having the connectors mounted flush with the tuner casing?

If you don't have the plugs then you can just splice the wires together I guess if you're getting one of Patrick's new tuners...

I'm about to order connectors from digikey for a little project and would like to confirm quantity:

If you search for part number H10085-ND, unity price is 1.04$ (Can) each. On the bottom of the page, I read: Standard Package 100.
What do you think? If I order 10 x H10085-ND, will I get 10 or 1000 pins for a total of 10.40$?. 1000 pins seems ridiculous for 10.40$, but at 1.04$ for each pin, a connector will cost 25$ + 5$ for housing... Is that the expected price?

Anyone received pins from digikey and would like to confirm?

Thanks!

Elperepat

It probably means $1.04 each but you have a minimum order quantity of 100.

BTW: That sound's real cheap. Digikey US list about US$3.5 for a single unit down to US$1.5-2 for 50 or more.

Unless it's different for shipments to Canada, you can order in 1 pc increments. I placed an order for 3 housings, 10 power pins and 80 signal pins and the prices (USD) on my order were $3.28, $0.611, $0.3804 each, respectively. I think the reference to 100 pcs is just the standard mfg supplied package quantity.

Cheers,
Phil

These terms : pins, connectors and housings are all greek to me.
I am, however very interested in
"the thing on the back of the car mounting sled that has all the wires dangling from it."
whach can also be refferred to as
"the thing that the empeg connects to when you slide it into your dashboard."
I would like to buy 2 of them.

Shonkey, I think you've got me covered on this one,
Lemme know what you need for cash to make sure I get 2 of these, when the time comes.

I plan to make a couple home docking stations which, if they come out well,
I'll need more of the above described connectors
because I'll use them for more docking stations that I think I plan to selll here.
I think I mentioned that in another post somewhere.

I will be doing them but for now it will be no noise filter, no tuner connector, no ISO connector and no mic socket. I will wire the tuner wires according to the colours on the current sled and supply the spare pins for the mic connector.

Look for an email next week about it with finalized prices too.

Very nice. Coupla questions for ya - how long did it take to make, and how difficult is it for someone with only beginner level soldering skills? Also, does it require a special crimper?

It is very simple to make. There is no soldering required. You can pick up a cheap crimper for under 20 bucks and make your own very easily. One of the crimpers I own that falls in this price range ia an AMP brand and says "Service Tool I" on the handle. There are no part numbers on it though. I think I got it at Rat Shack but am not sure.

I would solder them too if only because the crimped only ones from empeg had wires pull out

It's been reported in other threads that sleds from old pull-out car stereos can be retrofitted with some resourcefullness and a dremel tool. Of course, for a docking station, something workable could be fabricated from wood or sheet metal.

For those of you who wish to solder the connections. When you look at the pins you will see that there are two diffrent sets of flaps that are suppose to get crimped. The first set, closest to the pin, are for the bare wire. The second set, on the end of the connector are to be crimped over the insulation. The first set is for the electrical connection. The second set are to hold the wire so any flexing takes place away from the crimp. This is to reduce any chance of the wire breaking off. When you solder the connector, solder only were the wire is crimped for electrical connection and then only crimp the second set. If you solder the whole thing there is a greater chance that the wire will snap off at the beginning of the solder joint, due to vibration or wire movement. You will also need to be very quick with the soldering iron so as to not induce too much heat into the wire and cause srinkage of the insulation or wicking of the solder up the wire. Remember that the wire should be supple not stiff after the last crimp.

Yep. Thanks.
I just ordered two connectors and a bunch of pins.
Here is what is boils down to:
2 connector housings - $6.56 @3.28 ea.
50 small pins - $19.02 @ .38 ea. (ouch)
10 power pins - $6.11 @ .61 ea.

Total: $31.69 plus shipping. I opted for priority mail. There is an option for 1st class, but I wasn't sure of the weight.

I was forced to buy at least ten of the larger power pins - minimum order quantity. I only wanted 5 or 6 to cover myself for spares. So when I receive the order, I will post here and whoever is the first to request the extras (at least 4) gets them. (Free, via slow mail)
Save somebody having to order the power pins anyway.

Just did a little calculation. Digi-Key imposes a $5 handling charge if orders are less than $25. So whoever gets my free pins would still be compelled to buy two connectors and at least 49 small pins to come up to $25.
