One of Tony's posts sparked this thought to blame him for this......
When I lived in NJ (I know, someone has to), a popular fish dish was "Baked Scrod".
What on earth is a Scrod????
It tasted like standard white fish, but I cannot find a species called scrod and most wait staff just looked blank when I asked.
Since moving to TX I have yet to see scrod on the menu.

Like I said, blame Tony

I think a scrod is just a name for a baby cod fish. I actually had some scrod recently. In NJ no less!!

Doug told me a joke once after I used that term. This doesn't answer your question, but here it is (retold from memory, hope I get it right):

A businessman travels to Boston, and hails a taxi at the airport. He's in the mood for some seafood, so he asks the cab driver, "Hey, do you know where I can get scrod around here?"

The driver replies, "Buddy, I've been asked that question a million times in a million different ways. But that's the first time I've ever heard it said in the pluperfect subjunctive."

I have to ask, Tony, where did you pick up that term? It seems to be limited in use to the north east.

I don't remember exactly. It just sounds funny when used as a past tense for "screw".

Greetings!

Scrod

And yes, I am from New Jersey. You can always tell someone from New Jersey: most people from out of state will refer to the state as "Jersey". If you hear someone say "New Jersey", they have lived there for a while.

And yes, most people ask / answer directions by exit number instead of landmarks or locations...

You got it right. Classic.

And "Scrod is whatever they tell you it is, usually fish. If you paid more than $6/pound, you got scrod.."

A little scrod etymology here .

I remember seeing this one on the Straight Dope - are we talking about the same Doug as the one over there?

Bryan.

Speaking of Doug, the album Slugcology 101 should be on everyone's Empeg player!
