My empeg tried to kill it's self

Ok, I had drove to work yesterday, parked, and went inside. I know the empeg went into standby, since I spent some extra time gathering my things after pulling my keys out of the ignition.
I came back out 5 hours later to go and take a test, and found the new PaulWay mix I had added in queue playing just fine. Of course, the empeg should have been completely off, and considering how hot it was that day, it was dangerous for it to be running. And Hijack 278 was warning me TOO HOT, 71 C. Considering I burnt my finger on the case, I am pretty sure it was accurate.
So, 2 things. Any ideas why it turned back on when it was in standby? And second, any chance of getting hijack to shut down the empeg, or at least the drives when it gets too hot? I don't want to risk this again.

Possibly got an IR signal that made it wake up? But that would have meant that it was still in standby (LED pulsing) when you left the car. What is your standby timeout?
Once the standby timeout happens and it completely powers down I don't think there is anyway to revive the player short of applying +12v on the switched power line.

Although already mentioned in other threads, I note here for completeness:
- This is not the only reported case of the player waking up from standby mode unexpectedly. When it happened to me (in home mode) there was no infrared interference to my knowledge, no one was sitting on any IR buttons on anything.
- Mark said that there might have been a kernel bug to cause this to happen on rare occasions. But he thought he fixed it in recent versions of Hijack.

Standby is set to about 20 mins. No other empeg owners in this parking lot to have a random valid IR code sent to it.

It's obviously fairly warm (i.e. sunny) given the temps you are talking about - I was thinking IR from the sun rather than somebody else.
Also I don't know but does the empeg only wake up on recognised IR (translated or otherwise) commands or just any valid RC5 IR code?

Good question, and if IR was the cause of this one, hopefully my wish list item will be addressed.

Question: Was the mix about 5 hours into your current playlist? Was it going for the duration, or did it just seem to start up just before you arrived? Do you have a remote lock system (RF or IR) that could have triggered something electrical (lights? horn?) that could have sent a wake-up signal to the PIC?

Sorry to interrupt your regullarly scheduled thread, but "new PaulWay mix", is there a new one out? I haven't seen anything from Paul in a year or so. Did I miss a thread?

The playlist was as if it started shortly after I parked, thus it did come out of standby and not out of a cold power down. I do have an RF remote lock, but I know the empeg didn't start playing when I locked the car. The music was loud enough to hear outside the car easially.

Head over to this thread for info and a link to the PaulWay mixes. I had forgotten about the "new" ones, and found an unannounced one there, along with a longer version of one I had downloaded earlier.

Is it possible that when you closed the door when you left your car that it bumped the car enough to cause an input from the knob of the Rio? I know that turning the knob while in standby will cause the unit to awaken. Its probably a long shot, just an idea.

Nope, again I would have noticed it after closing the door, since the music would have instantly started. I didn't hear any music walking away from the car, but heard it 8 cars away on the way back out.

I was thinking IR from the sun rather than somebody else.
Or here's a thought. Maybe I've brought this up before, so forgive me if I've already said this and been shot down...
Does the player wake up when it gets "just any old IR command"? Or does it only wake up when it gets valid IR commands from the Rio remote or (if enabled) the Kenwood remote?
Because if the former, then it could easily have been any number of IR leakages in the parking lot, including the sun.
Corrolary follow up to that question:
Even if the default kernel only wakes up in response to a valid Rio/Kenwood IR command, what about Hijack? Since Hijack has the IR translation features, and hence, just any old IR command could theoretically be valid for Hijack, does Hijack wake up on just any old IR command?

Gee and was it me who shot you down? I don't think so.

The statements in that post were meant in a general sense. I honestly don't rememeber if I've ever asked that question anywhere on the BBS before.

Cool. I'm just in a crappy mood because my Linux box has been playing silly buggers all afternoon. I was offended by something I (edit)should n't have been....
As a side note: My subwoofer code is pretty much finished (would have been finished earlier if it wasn't for my stupid linux box). Variable cutoff frequency of 40,60,80,100,120 Hz and variable gain of -20 to +24db. Centre channel stuff is done too -20 to +24db. I guess I had better build some hardware now to actually use it
So I'm kinda in a better mood now.

Cool, so that means the DSP documentation has come in handy, then?
What about plain old bass and treble that don't need to hijack two of the EQ bands? Genixia, you reading this?

Yes indeed, but remember I haven't built any hardware yet.
There is a section on bass and treble but the way the DSP works is that sometimes if you use one feature you sacrifice another. I don't know whether the inbuilt bass/treble stuff requires sacrificing anything - looking at the block diagram, it doesn't. I'm sure Genixia will have something pretty soon. The DSP is quite easy to program given the right doco

How about someone with a compatible remote (empeg/rio, Kenwood, etc.) just playing a practical joke on you by flashing it through your rear window?
