Sheesh -- replying to my own post.

For some reason, the .jpg file didn't attach. It's 185K, within the filesize limit. Let me try it again...

In reply to:

Note that you have to feed a single monaural signal to all four speakers so they act in unison in order for this to work.

i'm thinking about experimenting with this.... if i put the speakers in this configuration:

2 in series, then both in parallel.... it will be the same resistance and therefore the same wattage, even though my amp is going to draw more power, if i remember my physics correctly.

i basically have the idea that i can eliminate the need for rear fill, removing my free-range 6x9 speakers completely, so sound from the trunk can reach the front more easily

i worry though that it will reduce low range because for now, my trunk acts as a semi-sealed enclosure for my 12" sub. i'm not too sure whats going to happen.

as for the enclosure, i'm thinking a HUGE sealed cylindrical is the best bet (yes, its ugly as hell, but the resistance to flex is incredible). that means my diameter is going to be approximately 15". i'm just not sure what volume i'm going to need.... probably depend on the T&S data that i won't be able to find because its not usually associated with 6 1/2"s.

will probably experiment with this this weekend. ask my buddies in the installing business to make a quick hack and see the performance. thanks for giving me ideas.

I have two off-topic questions about your install.

First, is there a cover of some nature that goes over the subs? I always see pictures of peoples subwoofers with the cones exposed and I always feel like something is going to puncture them.

Second, what are the lego bricks for?

Having never seen the car, it looks like there might be a cover in the same style as the panel just in front of the subs. There looks to be clips or something up by the window and small holes between the panel and the cloth of the enclosure for tabs to go behind the panel infront of the subs.

The lego bricks (assuming you mean the grey boxes with knobs at the very rear) looks to be 30 band equalizers.

Ah, the old "results trump theory" argument eh?

Yes, that's a picture of his system in "show off" mode. When the covers are on, it's completely stealth.

Most sub enclosures are designed so that you leave the covers on most of the time except when showing them off. I agree that people who leave the covers off of their subs are asking for trouble.

When the covers are on, it's completely stealth.

See attached picture.

The subwoofers are where the full-size spare tire used to be; the full-size spare was replaced with a space-saver spare, which (along with jack, lug wrench, tool kit, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, etc.) is located beneath the the amplifier rack. It's a tight fit -- there isn't more than a quarter inch of clearance anywhere back there, either in the subwoofer enclosure or in the storage compartment where the amp rack is.

It's a pretty cool install though! You haven't really lost any usable space, it's stealth, you still get a really good (competition level!) sound out of it and you can still use the car like a station wagon! What more could you want! :-)

Really great performance out of the station wagon.

Oh, wait, he's got that, too. Well, then I guess he does have the bases covered.
