I would like to hear of a plausible and reasonable example of when a "background" app (not on the display) needs to intercept button presses.

Userspace ir-translate. No display, but capture/modify the input event stream.

Doesn't sound reasonable to me. Does *anyone* still use userspace IR? If so, then they probably don't have Hijack installed. Moot point, or is it?
