Looks like a CDDB/freedb-like system for automatically tagging music files and adding metadata. They're also coupling it with an audio fingerprint engine to help identify songs automatically. Not the first time this has been done, I know someone on the board was involved with a company who did that sort of stuff, but it's interesting to see another one launch, and couple it with a pretty damn large database.

Not sure about their tagging software, though, and, of course, it's only available for Win32.

Yeah, ClemsonJeep was involved with that. He said the company lost out to another that was doing a similar thing. This seems to be a different one, though.

Several problems with the tagging program that I can see:

1) No ability to work through a proxy that I can see.

2) The bloody spinning brain thing plays havoc with the old 98 box i ran it on - but that may be because it was having trouble getting through to the server. Very odd, though - Explorer window (toolbars and all) kept refreshing....

3) Can't add directories to tag, can only add files. This means that working through my collection is going to be done selecting one directory at a time, and I *loathe* that.

I'll experiment at home and let you know if I find any further problems.

Edit: That'll teach me to use old machines.
1) Picks up its proxy information from Control Panel. V. Good.
2) Seems to have no problems on home machine. Must have been something to do with firewall or summat.
3) Patently untrue, it's just a different option.
So overall much better than I first thought. Will give it some testing tracks soon.

Cool, I look forward to hearing if it's worthwhile or not. Their database looks pretty darn big.

I started porting the source to Java on Wednesday ... I'm guessing I'll have it done by next weekend (maybe the weekend after depending on work). Barring any unforseen difficulty, I'll include it in the next release of jEmplode.

It's chalked up on my list of things to do, but it's not particularly high since it's not exciting

I'm still undecided on this. Maybe I just haven't RTFM, but I'm finding it doesn't identify a lot of the tracks I give it. Many of these will occur in their database and can be looked up manually, but the tagger still doesn't recognise them. When I go to the trouble of entering a CD or importing one from FreeDB, it still isn't in the database because it has to be moderated or something. I haven't figured out the moderation system, nor why I keep getting many instances of the same album to moderate when I try to use the functions I see in their web page.

Anyone else tried it?

Will try RTFM (the hacker's last resort).

just following up on this.... is musicbrainz a forgotten work for jemplode?

So many pieces of code, so little time I have the code that computes the musicbrainz hash for a tune. There are a couple other projects that have written the query engine in Java. I didn't really bother with it because I figured people would just use some other musicbrainz tagging program outside of jEmplode ...

yeah, but musicbrainz for identifying those tracks that you accidentally mangled or forgot to tag (i.e. ~track1.mp3), its great.
