Last time I was in Japan was the first time I had Saporro Dark. That beer was amazing. I talked to our local beer importers when I got back, and they said that they use to carry it, but haven't in about a year or so

Argh. Stella gives me a headache everytime I drink it! Grolsh is much better IMHO. Then again, I'm not a big beer/lager drinker anyway so I try to keep away from it all.

If I am drinking Japanese beer, it's got to be Kirin Ichiban. I will have to try Saporro Dark next time, but I don't think I've ever seen it.

Well, here in Georgia, we don't have much choice as to which beers we drink, since almost everything other than Budweiser and Coors Light (AKA horsepiss) is illegal. You can go to the store and buy 195 proof grain alcohol, but beer that is more than 6% (?) alcohol can not be sold in the state. That rules out almost every beer that has been mentioned here.

Time to move maybe !!
Where I live you never seem to get the same beer twice. So in the pub we just choose by specifying "a pint of interestingly named beer please", I wouldn't necessarily recommend this method of buying if you actually want a nice pint of beer, though it does expand your horizons.
But if all else looks crap - STELLA is your friend

Huh? Don't have much choice? Have you ever been to a Taco Mac or Summits Tavern? Over a hundred beers on tap... including fullers esb, fullers london pride, john courage, guiness (big seller), Paulaner Oktoberfest as well as the Heifewezen, Mackesson XXX, Old Peculiar, Tenants...etc... Just finished the passport club intiation which you have to drink 125 DIFFERENT beers. Fortnately I didn't have to drink any budweiser, miller OR coors because there is such a variety here... You are correct though it does suck that GA has a limit on how much alcohol beer can have, I believe it has to be called Malt Liquor if it is over that limit...
What ever happened to Sam Adams Double Bock, I used to see that at mellow mushroom a several years ago seasonally but haven't seen it lately....very tasty for a microbrew.
Oh speaking of Japanese beer, has anyone heard of Asahi Black Beer? I've only seen it available here in one Sushi Bar but would have to say that it would have to be one of my favorite choices at a Jap Restaurant.

Old Peculiar
Old Peculier? In "Southeastern, US"? Good effort! Did it travel well?
Edit: and how does a place with 100 beers on tap get through barrels quickly enough to maintain the quality? or do they not have all 100 on at once?

ooops... it was early here when I posted that, wish it was available on tap but at least we do have it in the bottles.
Here's Summits bottled list http://www.summits-online.com/01_sandysprings/bottled_beer_brands.html
and their draft list... http://www.summits-online.com/03_cumming/draft_beer_brands.html
...and yes all of this is available at fine establishments here around Atlanta, Georgia...
Edit: Yes, they are all on tap at once.... I see your point on the quality issue and have wondered that myself; had one skunked John Courage before, but from my experience having a keg at the house for summertime pool parties the Fullers fairs suprisingly well for about three months and besides those English kegs are a bit smaller than our american Kegs.
Also something to mention is that some of the microbrew beer, such as the Hoegarden, Framboise and Taripin is offered in a "bullet keg" which is I *think* about 5gallons. The bullet kegs also make it easier for a Pub with not much more room to add another tap fairly easily since you could probably squeeze it between a couple of 13-14gallon kegs.
Edit Again: The Guinness Toast here is at 11PM tonight (roughly 14hours) is this just a marketing thing here in the US or do yuns have it there too?

Nice! Mine's a Ruddles County if I'm ever passing that way, though Abita Amber is nice too and having Kriek on tap sounds deadly.

Gosh -- the last time Empeg got a keg (of Lidstone's Session) we were instructed it only lasted five days, and it was getting distinctly less good even on day three.

I've never heard of it, but then I'm not a fan of Guinness (Roger is, though, and I think he just drinks it whenever he feels like it).

We had it on a spigot, gravity-fed. It was ale, don't forget. I guess CO2-pressurised kegs would last longer.

hehehe...I'm suprised it lasted THAT long. Yes, CO2 systems are the way to go at least here in the US since we can't get the good English brews that fresh.... I can't say that I've ever been to a Pub here that didn't have a CO2 system or nitrogen system (for Guinness & Boddington).
cheers!

A local microbrewery (The Unlikely Cowboy) only sells their beer on tap, or by the keg. They also have a 'keggie' which is only like 3.5g, but it has a built in nitrogen dispensing system. Way groovy. They actually have one of their Belgium seasonal waiting for me to pick it up after work...

It's a marketing ploy.
To be fair, I've been drinking a lot less Guinness since I moved to Cambridge. This is for two primary reasons:
1. The selection of real ales in Cambridge is generally superb, so I've not really felt the need to.
2. I used to live five minutes walk from Molly Malone's Irish pub in Richmond, Surrey, which served a cracking pint of Guinness. Now I don't.

Old Peculier - I drove past the brewery not three quarters of an hour ago. It's in Masham, Theakston is a nearby village - can't stop, off for some S&N No.3, it's guest beer at my local and he's on the last barrel!

Now, that would be awesome...unfortunately brewpubs just became legal here in the bible belt within the past ten years or so....so I feel lucky to be able to stop by the Buckhead Brewery or Hops to get a taste of some homebrew let alone bring some home with me...

Goddam it, the medics have told me that I must not drink an alcoholic drop, beer or otherwise, at least until a further liver function test in three months time.
Hard to think how I have a social life, I'm a stand at the bar and have a chat to whoever is in, sort of guy.
March6, April6, May6, June6 - could be cutting loose in a big way when I get to the meet!

*bump**bump**bump*
This other thread on beer brought up fond memories of this particular thread. I'm not drinking anything at the moment but in about 30 minutes, I'm heading straight to the store to pick myself up either a sixer of these, or some pints of these, or maybe some of these (recommended by Dave, if they are stocking them yet).
